Olanzapine Increases Neural Chemorepulsant-Draxin Expression from the Grown-up Rat Hippocampus.
To explore the association between bacterial vaginosis (BV) and periodontitis (PD) and to determine whether PD and BV might be linked with systemic serum alterations. We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001-2004, with women aged 18-49 years old and diagnosed with or without BV according to Nugent's method. PD was defined according to the 2012 case definition. We compared serum counts according to the presence of PD and the presence of BV. Multivariable regression was used to explore and identify relevant variables towards the presence of BV. 961 women fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In women with BV, PD was associated with higher inflammation, characterized by increased white blood cells (p = 0.006) and lymphocyte (p = 0.009) counts. Predictive models presented a statistically significant association between PD and BV [Odds Ratio (OD) = 1.69, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.09-2.61 for periodontitis; OD = 2.37, 95% CI 1.30-4.29 for severe PD]. Adagrasib datasheet Fully adjusted models for age, smoking, body mass index, diabetes mellitus and number of systemic conditions reinforced this association [OD = 1.71, 95% CI 1.06-2.76 for PD; OD = 2.21, 95% CI 1.15-4.25 for severe PD]. An association between BV and PD is conceivable. PD was associated with higher systemic markers of inflammation in women with BV. Our data is novel and could serve as a foundation to guide future studies in the confirmation of this association and the underlying mechanisms.Accurately segmenting foods from optical images is a challenging task, yet becoming possible with the help of recent advances in Deep Learning based solutions. Automated identification of food items opens up possibilities of useful applications like nutrition intake monitoring. Given large variations in food choices, Deep Learning based solutions still struggle to generate human level accuracy. In this work, we propose a novel Sequential Transfer Learning method using Hierarchical Clustering. This novel approach simulates a step by step problem solving framework based on clustering of similar types of foods. The proposed approach provides up to 6% gain in accuracy compared to traditional network training and generated a robust model performing better in challenging unseen cases. This approach is also tested for segmenting foods in Danish school children meals for dietary intake monitoring as an application. The preoperative accurate diagnosis is difficult in the patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN). The aim of the present study was to elucidate the roles of systemic inflammation responses and nutritional status indexes in IPMN. High-grade dysplasia was classified as a malignant neoplasm in the study. We retrospectively reviewed 155 patients who underwent pancreatectomy. The correlation between the clinical factors and several indexes of a systemic inflammation response and nutritional status was analyzed. Among the biomarkers, prognostic nutritional index (PNI) value of malignant IPMN patients was significantly lower than that of benign IPMN patients (P = 0.023), whereas PNI was not significant predictor for malignant IPMN. The multivariate analysis showed that a PNI 22.5 U/mL (OR 6.64, 95% CI 1.73-25.6, P = 0.006) were significant independent predictors of the presence of lymph node metastasis (LNM). Our scoring system developed based on these two factors. Patients with a score of 0 had no LNM and zero disease-related death. The present study suggested the roles of PNI on the IPMN patients who undergo curative pancreatectomy.Taxane is a family of front-line chemotherapeutic agents against ovarian cancer (OC). The therapeutic efficacy is frequently counteracted by the development of chemoresistance, leading to high rates of relapse in OC patients. The role(s) of microRNAs (miRNAs) in cancer chemoresistance had been supported by many evidences Epigenetic regulation by miRNAs has been reported to influence cancer development and response to therapeutics, however, their role in OC resistance to paclitaxel (PTX) is unclear. Here, we conducted miRNA profiling in the responsive and PTX-resistant OC cell lines before and after treatment with epigenetic modulators. We reveal 157 miRNAs to be downregulated in the PTX-resistant cells compared to parental controls. The expression of five miRNAs (miRNA-7-5p, -204-3p, -501-5p, -3652 and -4286) was restored after epigenetic modulation, which was further confirmed by qPCR. In silico analysis of the signaling pathways targeted by the selected miRNAs identified the PI3K-AKT pathway as the primary target. Subsequent cDNA array analysis confirmed multiple PI3K-AKT pathway members such as AKT2, PIK3R3, CDKN1A, CCND2 and FGF2 to be upregulated in PTX-resistant cells. STRING analysis showed the deregulated genes in PTX-resistant cells to be primarily involved in cell cycle progression and survival. Thus, high throughput miRNA and cDNA profiling coupled with pathway analysis and data mining provide evidence for epigenetically regulated miRNAs-induced modulation of signaling pathways in PTX resistant OC cells. It paves the way to more in-depth mechanistic studies and new therapeutic strategies to combat chemoresistance.Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) enhances pulmonary surfactant performance in vivo by molecular mechanisms still unknown. Here, the interfacial structure and the composition of lung surfactant films have been analysed in vitro under TH as well as the molecular basis of its improved performance both under physiological and inhibitory conditions. The biophysical activity of a purified porcine surfactant was tested under slow and breathing-like dynamics by constrained drop surfactometry (CDS) and in the captive bubble surfactometer (CBS) at both 33 and 37 °C. Additionally, the temperature-dependent surfactant activity was also analysed upon inhibition by plasma and subsequent restoration by further surfactant supplementation. Interfacial performance was correlated with lateral structure and lipid composition of films made of native surfactant. Lipid/protein mixtures designed as models to mimic different surfactant contexts were also studied. The capability of surfactant to drastically reduce surface tension was enhanced at 33 °C.
